Audience Abroad

They have a fairly defined audience abroad and so if it has a happy client there, it is simple for them to reach out here.” But publishers differ and are optimistic of more entrants propelling the market further. “I foresee at least 5 to 7 new players entering over the next 2 years... It is a reflection of the potential of the market,” says Sharma. And he is not too way off, a glance at the pages worth of advertisements these magazines carry, clearly show that the medium is picking up, after all nobody would spend the moolah if there wasn’t an audience to cash back on. So, whether you like it or not, these sexy men’s magazines are the metrosexual male’s latest muse (who is high on both life and style). Can we see some pretty faces going green already?

IT’S ‘TIME’ FOR RETAIL!

TIMEX ROLLS OUT A MASSIVE RETAIL PLAN TO TAKE ON BIGGIES IN THE SECTOR. WILL THE MOVE PAY-OFF?
It’s not only H. G. Wells’ Time Machine, which could travel into the future. When it comes to the homely milieu, Timex was smart enough to identify that the five letter word ‘retail’ is going to drive Indian Inc. in the future. So it comes as no surprise that this time-manager from the country of Uncle Sam is going gaga over its retail venture – Time Factory. “With the retail boom happening in this country, I believe that the most important marketing tool to promote a brand is no longer advertising, but retail.

The release further says that Hilton with DLF is aiming to form one of the largest international hotel chains in India. KABHI FILM, KABHI TV

Bollywood director Karan Johar of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham and Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna fame, is once again in news – thanks to NDTV Ltd., which has roped in Johar for its general entertainment channel venture. His company, Dharma Productions, will now have an equity stake in NDTV Entertainment. He will also become a member of the company board. So, what does this mean for the average Joe? Well, he can get set to see a lot more of Bollywood gupsh up on Indian telly, even as Dharma Productions is slated to become an exclusive content supplier for NDTV. With a slew of successful films behind him, besides being branded as a man with the golden touch (one person who got people back to the movie theatres, that is!), there are no prizes for guessing that Johar will bring a lot of Bollywood content to the proposed channel. Oh! And of course, with bosom buddy Shahrukh Khan also tightening his laces to re-enter the idiot box (Yes! The KBC deal), guess the viewer is in for a soiree!

Bush And His War

Last month the public delivered a huge vote of no confidence in Bush and his war. He’s still the commander in chief, but the new majority in Congress can put a lot of pressure on him to at least begin a withdrawal. I’m worried, however, that Democrats may have counted on the Iraq Study Group to provide them with political cover. Now that the study group has apparently wimped out, will the Democrats do the same? Well, here’s a question for those who might be tempted, yet again, to shy away from a confrontation with Bush over Iraq: How do you ask a man to be the last to die for a bully’s ego?

Growth of the Mobile Handset Market

Another factor that has contributed to the growth of the mobile handset market is the much lower R&D costs in India, which typically account for more than 40% of the total product development cost. As a result, the last five years have seen companies like Nokia, Motorola, Alcatel & Ericsson establishing their design and R&D centers here in India. Not only this, even the government realized the immense growth opportunity that lies in the telecom sector and made some noteworthy regulatory changes to significantly bring down the custom tariffs from 10% to 5% and abolished the Special Additional Duty of 4%; the changes that forced many mobile handset manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers to consider the option of manufacturing in India.

INCARNATE ENTREPRENEUR

“Women are not on the rise. They have already risen” is perhaps the best way one would define Tomoyo Nonaka,Chairman, Sanyo Electric Company Ltd. (a leader in consumer & commercial electronics), who is one of the most influential woman entrepreneurs in Japan! Hearing Tomoyo converse might make one purport that she is a fervent environmentalist, talented with great oratory skills. To top it all, as a woman who qualify ed with a Master’s degree in the GraduateSchool in Humanities and obtained a degree in journalism from the Faculty of Humanities of Sophia University in Tokyo, to view Tomoyo simply based on her educational degrees, can only but mislead.

'Home Deliveries'

Besides, people r to just pick up their phone and ask the friendly neighbourhood store to ‘home deliver’ a packet of milk or munchies as and when she feels like it. There is simply no way Wal-Mart can afford to do home deliveries, no matter how much it tries to adapt to the Indian environment. One solution for Wal-Mart could be to locate the stores in the vicinity of where target consumers live – that is inside cities and densely populated suburbs. But the real estate costs of this move will be astronomical and could derail the viability of Wal-Mart from day one inside India. So what exactly can Wal-Mart do? Well, to survive as a company that will remain in the rest of the century, Wal-Mart has no choice but to try and have a strong presence in India and China. Alexander could afford to go back from the Indian borders. Wal-Mart cannot afford to!

Political Tool

A couple of months ago, Justice B. P. Jeevan Reddy Committee had strongly recommended the repeal of the controversial Act against which there is growing resentment in the North-Eastern states. The Act, which gives discretionary powers to the forces, has become a symbol of state oppression and a political tool in the hands of the insurgents to galvanise support among the locals. The regular incidents of indiscriminate killing of innocents, maltreatment of the local population and a few rape cases committed by the armed forces personnel constantly add fuel to simmering discontent in the states, thus making the provisions in the Act draconian.
