IT’S ‘TIME’ FOR RETAIL!

TIMEX ROLLS OUT A MASSIVE RETAIL PLAN TO TAKE ON BIGGIES IN THE SECTOR. WILL THE MOVE PAY-OFF?
It’s not only H. G. Wells’ Time Machine, which could travel into the future. When it comes to the homely milieu, Timex was smart enough to identify that the five letter word ‘retail’ is going to drive Indian Inc. in the future. So it comes as no surprise that this time-manager from the country of Uncle Sam is going gaga over its retail venture – Time Factory. “With the retail boom happening in this country, I believe that the most important marketing tool to promote a brand is no longer advertising, but retail.

Hilton With DLF

The release further says that Hilton with DLF is aiming to form one of the largest international hotel chains in India. In the first phase of the rollout, there will be nearly 20 hotels set up at locations like Chandigarh, Chennai, and Kolkata, cities that are presently attracting a lot of business in the hospitality sector. Now for the present situation: The Hilton chain currently has nine franchised hotels in India. For these, it has a tie up with East India Hotels (of the Oberoi hotels fame). Under this arrangement, while the properties are managed and maintained by East India Hotels, Hilton takes care of the international marketing.

KABHI FILM, KABHI TV

Bollywood director Karan Johar of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham and Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna fame, is once again in news – thanks to NDTV Ltd., which has roped in Johar for its general entertainment channel venture. His company, Dharma Productions, will now have an equity stake in NDTV Entertainment. He will also become a member of the company board. So, what does this mean for the average Joe? Well, he can get set to see a lot more of Bollywood gupsh up on Indian telly, even as Dharma Productions is slated to become an exclusive content supplier for NDTV. With a slew of successful films behind him, besides being branded as a man with the golden touch (one person who got people back to the movie theatres, that is!), there are no prizes for guessing that Johar will bring a lot of Bollywood content to the proposed channel. Oh! And of course, with bosom buddy Shahrukh Khan also tightening his laces to re-enter the idiot box (Yes! The KBC deal), guess the viewer is in for a soiree!

Bush And His War

Last month the public delivered a huge vote of no confidence in Bush and his war. He’s still the commander in chief, but the new majority in Congress can put a lot of pressure on him to at least begin a withdrawal. I’m worried, however, that Democrats may have counted on the Iraq Study Group to provide them with political cover. Now that the study group has apparently wimped out, will the Democrats do the same? Well, here’s a question for those who might be tempted, yet again, to shy away from a confrontation with Bush over Iraq: How do you ask a man to be the last to die for a bully’s ego?
